Irene Marie Dunne was born on December 20th, 1898 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father, a steamboat captain, died when she was fourteen, and her mother moved the family to Indiana, where she took piano and singing lessons and studied to become a music teacher at the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1918. She also auditioned for the Chicago Musical College and won a scholarship, officially graduating in 1926. Although she failed two auditions for the Metropolitan Opera Company she won the leading role in the popular touring play Irene, and had her Broadway debut in 1922. She starred in the successful and groundbreaking musical Show Boat in 1927, which led to her breakout roles for RKO Pictures. Dunne had many dramatic roles during the Pre-Code era, with her first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her turn in Cimarron in 1931. She was subsequently nominated four more times throughout the 1930s and 40s, but never won. Under contract with Warner Bros. she helmed several successful musicals, including reprising her role from Showboat for the 1936 film version. She starred in multiple screwball comedies opposite Cary Grant and Charles Boyer, and embraced her age by taking on more motherly and serious roles in the late 1940s. After three commercial failures in a row between 1950 and 1952, she unofficially retired from film and worked in television and radio from then on. She was nicknamed “The First Lady of Hollywood” for her regal and easy-to-work-with manner, was one of the most fervent Hollywood supporters of the war effort during WWII, and was a presenter at Disneyland’s “Dedication Day” in 1955. Dunne devoted her retirement to philanthropy and was chosen by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a delegate for the United States to the United Nations, in which she advocated world peace and highlighted refugee-relief programs. She received numerous honorary doctorates, a Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame, and a Papal knighthood as Dame of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. She worked with the American Cancer Society, was co-chairman of the American Red Cross, was a board member of Technicolor, and established an African American school in Los Angeles, as well as founding the Irene Dunne Guild to raise funds for St. John’s Hospital. In 1985 she was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor for her services to the arts, as well as receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and her handprints in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Dunne died in her Holmby Hills home on September 4th, 1990, and is still considered one of the best actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood to never win a major award, as well as a pioneer in actors working freelance rather than under contracts and paving the way for other actors to get involved in politics and philanthropy.
