Im Warsa (20th Century) Balinese, Oil on Canvas. Signed lower left, "Im Warsa / Payogan / Ubud, Bali".
Oil on canvas painting depicting the festivities around the Indonesian barong dance. Dense with detail, the painting depicts the celebration in the courtyard of a traditional temple nestled in the jungle.

Sight Size: 23 1/2 x 15 3/4 in.The Indonesian Barong dance is a traditional Balinese performance that embodies the eternal battle between good and evil. Barong, a mythical lion-like creature, represents the forces of good, while Rangda, the demon queen, symbolizes evil. The dance is a vibrant and energetic depiction of the conflict between these two powerful beings, often involving elaborate costumes, music, and dramatic choreography. Performed as part of religious and cultural ceremonies, the Barong dance is an important part of Balinese heritage, meant to invoke protection and harmony. The dancers, adorned in colorful costumes, bring the characters to life through stylized movements and captivating storytelling, often accompanied by traditional Gamelan music.
