Fendi Srl is an Italian luxury fashion house producing fur, ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, fragrances, eyewear, timepieces, and accessories. It was founded in Via del Plebiscito, Rome in 1925 by fashion designers Edoardo Fendi (1904-1954) and Adele Casagrande (1897-1978) as a fur and leather shop. Their early success led them to open a boutique in Via Piave, which became extremely popular with tourists visiting Rome and spread their designs around the globe. In 1946 their five daughters (Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla, and Alda) joined the company, dividing the company equally between them after their father’s death and their mother’s retirement. Karl Lagerfeld joined Fendi in 1965 and created the company’s iconic logo, a double F in a ying-yang style rectangle (sometimes square), which was versatile enough to adorn nearly every product they made from then on. His obsessive, intense, hands-on approach led the company into a new era, with him handling operations on multiple levels, even taking all fashion photographs of their products himself for the next sixty years. Despite working for other brands like Chloe and Valentino and single-handedly reviving Chanel as a brand in the 1980s, Lagerfeld remained with Fendi the rest of his life, becoming creative director in 1966 when they presented their first high fashion collection, expanding their interests in the United States and Japan. Lagerfeld went on to release cosmetics and men’s accessories for the first time in 1969 and was personally responsible for the legendary fur and women’s ready-to-wear collections which were first launched in 1977. In 1985 the company began offering perfumes, and sought out new markets by making eyewear, jeans, and even home furnishings in the late 1980s. Their first United States boutique opened on 5th Avenue in New York City in 1989, where they debuted their Knicoat collection a few years later, a line of wool coats and sweaters designed to be worn together. By 1994 more than 50% of their revenue came from leather goods and accessories, with the rest almost evenly divided between general apparel and furs. That same year Anna’s daughter Silvia joined the company as artistic director, but in 1999 Prada and LVMH initiated a joint takeover effort of Fendi, acquiring 51% of company control in a mutual agreement to prevent Gucci from buying the company outright. Under the deal Prada and LVMH were obligated to acquire any of the remaining 49% percent of Fendi should the sisters decide to sell. In 2001 Fendi officially became part of the Fashion & Leather Goods division of LVMH, with its headquarters remaining in the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome. The company lost money for two consecutive years, leading Prada to agree to sell its stake to LVMH. The company expanded further in the late 2000s and 2010s, with their own name brand condos and hotels attracting significant media attention. The last sister to sell her stake, Carla, continued to act as a chairwoman and minority owner until 2008, and Karl Lagerfeld passed away in 2019, the last living legend of the Fendi brand. The company is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2025, with over 3,000 employees and 215 stores worldwide, and its products still adorning movie stars, celebrities, and heads of state the world over.
