Herbert “Herbie” Rose was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1930. Life on the island was not easy, but his mother always encouraged his artistic streak, saving to get him canvases, brushes, and paints that he put to use, teaching himself to create vibrant landscapes and genre scenes by the time he was thirteen. Before long he was selling his works out of their home to passersby, and in his mid-teens he was discovered by the owner of a sugar factory who bought many of his paintings. His patron also recognized his athletic abilities and recruited him from high school to play cricket for the company. This got him free housing and a regular income, which allowed him to devote all the rest of his time to painting, and by 1950 he had saved up enough money to travel to New York. He graduated, Cum Laude, from the New York Phoenix School of Design, while taking additional courses at the Pratt Institute. During this time, to make ends meet, he worked as a nurse’s aide on night shifts at Sloan Kettering Institute, a sobering experience that influenced his art significantly. His Caribbean upbringing mixed with his desire to emulate artists like Rembrandt brought him swift recognition in the area, with specific praise for his use of light and color to portray even the dingiest Manhattan street. He found steady commercial work in the advertising field, honing his skills in technical rendering and designing, and was regularly contracted by Colgate Palmolive, Texaco, Sherwin Williams Paints, and Hertz. He returned to Jamaica, seeking to reconnect with his roots and focus more on creative pursuits, but wound up working as an art director for a large advertising business there. When his parents died in 1959 he quit to take over the bar and restaurant they owned, finally selling it in 1963. He opened his own gallery in his home, where he and his wife raised four children while he painted mainly in oil and acrylic to portray the people and scenes of his native Portland parish. His watercolor career began after meeting John Pike, who invited him to his school in Woodstock, New York to study. Here Pike introduced him to other artists such as Tony van Hasselt, Herb Olsen, Ed Whitney, Tom Hill, and Robert Wood, and the experience instilled in him a desire to teach as well. He moved back to the United States in the early 1980s, settling in Bradenton, Florida and opening a studio as well as teaching classes at nearby Ringling College of Art and Design and the Manatee Art League. In the early 1990s he was made the unofficial mayor of Village of the Arts, a revitalization effort that he and six other residents of the area spearheaded, and in the late 1990s he married his second wife, artist Graciela Giles, with whom he opened a new studio, Rose Giles Gallery. His son Dwight joined him on the faculty of Ringling after graduating from there in the 2000s, and Rose remained an integral part of the artistic community until his death on June 27th, 2017.
