Patrick Joseph Ryan (also known by his pseudonym Henri Plisson) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 17th, 1934. From childhood he had a passion for being an artist, and earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska. He earned his masters in fine art at the University of Southern California, and spent the next two years traveling through Spain, Italy, and France painting and absorbing Europe’s rich art history. It was during this time that he adopted his second name, as his style changed dramatically from abstract to impressionism, and when he returned to America he continued to sell his art under both names through a number of galleries, as well as on a commissioned basis. By the late 1970s he had reached the height of his career, with collections of his work held by many celebrities and corporations, and he was painting almost exclusively as Patrick Ryan. In the late 80s Ryan’s work was in such high demand that he could not keep up, and began to publish numerous serigraph and limited edition silk-screen prints of his impressionistic works through Colville Publishing to broaden his market. In 1990 he began to suffer a series of blackouts and underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, but continued to experience seizures for the rest of his life, impairing his vision and ability to paint. Patrick moved around California during his final years, as well as traveling internationally to seek further inspiration, and passed away at an assisted living facility in Escondido on August 21st, 2006.
