Helene Berman was born in New York City in 1932. She attended George Washington High School and went on to receive her Bachelors in Education at Hunter College in 1951, while studying art. She married Ivan Tullman Berman on December 19th, 1951, and they spent two years in New Jersey before moving to East Meadow on Long Island. They had a daughter, Susan, and Helene began painting after seeing how Susan responded to images of flowers, which became her primary inspiration. Over the next ten years she had three more children, while devoting her time between them, teaching, and painting, mainly in oils and watercolors. In 1974 while on a skiing excursion with her husband she had an injury to her leg, and when doctors examined it they discovered it was a type of sarcoma that was rapidly spreading. She immediately had the leg amputated, which cleared the cancer from her body, and devoted herself fully to painting from that time on. She took lessons at the Roslyn Museum of Art and went on to have her work displayed there. Several collections hold pieces of hers, including the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania and the New York Institute of Technology. She became a champion for the rights of the disabled as well, fully supported by her husband until his death in 2005. After her death on Thanksgiving Day in 2020, her work was put on permanent display at the Samanea New York Market, as well as in the East Meadow Public Library.
