Harriet Thorpe was born in New York City in 1923 and studied at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and the Art Students League. With her solid artistic training she eventually settled on the West Coast in California and quickly established her reputation with numerous museum and gallery exhibits. She showed at the Crocker Museum, San Francisco Art Museum, Oakland Museum, DeYoung Museum, Triton Museum, plus other venues. A number of galleries in California granted her one-person shows, including Maxwell Galleries, Villa Montalvo (University of California), Pacific Grove Art Center and Zantman Gallery in Carmel. Her abstract paintings include numerous interpretive landscapes and cityscapes plus a variety of other subjects. The landscapes often communicate a spirit of solitude and vastness. Op art and geometric abstracts were included as part of her oeuvre. Along with her husband Lester she had one son, Marc Thorpe, who went on to become one of the most prominent designers and model makers for Industrial Light & Magic, heavily encouraged by his artistic mother. She passed away in 2012.
