Guy Buffet was born on January 13th, 1943 in Paris, France, at the height of World War II. He grew up working in the family restaurant, and began pursuing his artistic dreams by drawing advertisements and doodles on napkins for them. As a teenager his mother saved to send him to the Beaux Arts de Toulon in Sanary-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, and after graduating he joined the French Navy when he was 19, quickly becoming the official artist for them. They arranged showings for him all over the world, and after two years he was discharged from service, finding himself in Oahu, Hawaii. He was commissioned by the state to create original art and murals that are still on display throughout the Hawaiian islands. He also met his longtime partner Lydia Carriere, who became his business representative in addition to giving him two children, and they settled permanently in Maui. He spent much time in California as well, and became famous the world over for his illustrations and paintings of chefs, sommeliers, and waiters. In his final years he and Lydia planned a long excursion to France, revisiting many of his favorite locations, but on September 22nd, 2023, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while they were in Corsica on the island of Ajaccio and died before he could receive medical attention. Since then his pieces have increasingly found their way into countless public, private, and corporate collections around the globe.
