Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré was born on January 6th, 1832 in Strasbourg, France. At the age of fifteen he began working as a caricaturist for Le Journal Pour Rire, heavily influenced by the illustrations of J. J. Grandville. Wood-engraving was his primary method at this time, and in the late 1840s and early 1850s he made several text comics, where the story is conveyed through a block of text below the image, rather than in speech bubbles. Doré subsequently went on to win commissions to depict scenes from books by Cervantes, Rabelais, Balzac, Milton, and Dante, all by the age of 20. In 1853 he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron, which led to commissions from several British publishers, including a new illustrated Bible in 1866 that had a major exhibition in London. In 1856 he produced 12 folio-size illustrations of The Legend of The Wandering Jew, which propagated long standing antisemitic views of the time, for a short poem which Pierre-Jean de Béranger had derived from a novel by Eugène Sue. His 1860 illustrations of a French edition of Don Quixote, particularly his depictions of the knight and his squire Sancho Panza, became so famous that they influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors ideas of the physical “look” of the two characters for over a hundred years. The government of France made him a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1861. Doré also illustrated an oversized edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven in 1883 that similarly influenced images of Poe’s works in collections, films, and theatrical productions for decades afterwards. In 1867 the Doré Gallery opened in Bond Street, London. In 1869 he collaborated with Blanchard Jerrold, the son of dramatist Douglas William Jerrold, to produce a comprehensive portrait of London, and he divided his time between France and England from then on. The completed book, called London: A Pilgrimage, with 180 wood engravings, was published in 1872. Doré never married and, following the death of his father in 1849, continued to live with his mother, illustrating books until his death by heart attack in Paris on January 23rd, 1883. At the time of his death Doré was working on illustrations for an edition of Shakespeare’s plays, and he was such a prolific artist that the full scope of his work is not completely known due to poor record keeping on the part of his numerous publishers. He created at least 10,000 illustrations, and was renowned as one of the greatest printmakers and comic artists of his generation.
