Girard-Perregaux SA is a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer that first opened in Geneva in 1791. It was created by the watchmaker and goldsmith Jean-François Bautte, who sought to bring together all facets of the industry under one roof. This included the engineering of the watch all the way to the final hand-assembly and hand-polishing of each piece. In 1832 his son Jacques Bautte and a new partner Jean-Samuel Rossel became co-owners of the company. In 1852 the watchmaker Constant Girard founded Girard & Cie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He then married Marie Perregaux in 1854, and the Girard-Perregaux Manufactory was founded in 1856. In 1906 Constant Girard-Gallet, their son, acquired the Bautte House and merged it with Girard-Perregaux & Cie to form the earliest iteration of the current business. By then they were an internationally appreciated brand, having won a gold medal at the 1889 International Exposition in Paris with their Tourbillon design, which remained their flagship product for decades. Their headquarters moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in the early 20th Century, and they focused on mechanical watches mainly through both World Wars. The quartz crisis of the 1980s led them to be acquired by the Swiss Sowind Group, and in the 1990s they were purchased by the French luxury group Kering. The Girard-Perregaux Museum was built in Villa Marguerite in 1999 to celebrate over two hundred years of celebrated designs and innovative mechanisms, including the iconic 1966 Collection and Vintage 1945. In 2022 Kering sold its stake in the company via a management buyout, returning complete control to the Sowind Group.
