George Vaughan Curtis was born in Southampton, England in 1859. As a youth he showed interest in art, so his parents supported him traveling to Paris to study at the Academie Julian. There he met and was heavily influenced by Alphonse Legros and Benjamin Constant, who later helped him find pupils to teach in order to support himself. He focused primarily on allegorical figural painting as well as completing murals for wealthy patrons and institutions, but when he discovered marine art he decided to emigrate to the United States in 1894 to explore and capture the Eastern coast. In his lifetime he had only a few exhibitions, including one at the Royal Academy where he was able to display his watercolors, but his hunting scenes and landscapes with Victorian and Edwardian influences fared better in America where they stood out against his contemporaries in the Hudson River School. He became a member of the Society of Independent Artists, frequently showing and selling in galleries throughout New England. He died in 1943 in Washington, D.C., and many of his works are held in private and public collections, with the largest permanent display at the Musee d’Art d’Histoire in the Ville de Melun in France.
