Gary Welton was born in Brainerd, Minnesota in 1963, and raised in a creative family environment of visual artists, singers, and dancers. Developing a flamboyant and gregarious personality at the same time as his artistic aspirations, he graduated with a BFA in studio arts from the University of Minnesota in 1984. His professors Peter Busa, Herman Somberg and Malcom Meyers all had a profound influence on him, and when he took a drawing class with ballerinas as models he discovered his muse, drawn to the delicate and graceful shapes that dancers could hold. Welton had his first solo exhibition in Edina, Minnesota in 1985, with major national and international exhibitions of his paintings ever since. In 1990 his style solidified when he asked a dancer to pose nude for him, eventually encouraging her to dance rather than hold a position as well as picking out the colors he would use, and he became focused on capturing the motion and movement of the entire dance in a single canvas. Since then nearly every work has been semi-collaborative with his models, making each one a truly unique and personal visual experience. His works are found in many commercial and university galleries and museums including the Judith Ewing Morlan Contemporary Art Gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the Minneapolis Woman’s Club, the Key West Gallery in Key West, Florida, Rajputana Palace in India, and the Beverly Art Center and Museum in Chicago, among many others. He is a regular featured artist in galleries of Princess Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruise Lines. In 2016 The Minnesota Vikings and the U.S. Bank Stadium commissioned Welton to capture the rich history and the moving athleticism of American football, with the resulting 64 extremely large scale paintings and drawings permanently on display in their VIP suites and in the Medtronic Club. Mr. Welton is the recipient of numerous awards and honors and his work has been selected for inclusion in the “Art in Embassies Program” in Reykjavik, Iceland. Today he is represented by numerous galleries in his home state and continues to make highly sought-after abstract oil paintings.
