- Lot Description
French Vintage Beaded Handbag. The bag features a light, neutral background (possibly cream or light gray) with a floral design in shades of yellow and gray. The front of the bag is decorated with a stylized floral pattern. The bag has a classic, rectangular shape with rounded edges.
Condition: Commensurate with age.

Purses, which have been around for thousands of years (the oldest being found on the body of Ötzi the Iceman who lived around 3,300 BC), became less about functionality and more about appearance, with ornateness, quality of stitching, and adornment with jewels, beads, or precious stones signifying social status. The shift in the use of the purse (and the size of it) led to the development of the reticule in the 1700s, the evening bag in the 1800s, and eventually the handbag around 1900, directly influenced by the shifts in the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian era on gender norms and aesthetics.
