Letters On The Masonic Institution. By John Quincy Adams. Boston: Press Of T. R. Marvin, No. 24 Congress Street, with gilt lettering on the spine, embossed covers, yellow endpapers and an inscription on the front free endpaper which reads” Moses W Weld from his father May 25th 1847”, a 38 page preface, two pages of contents, and 284 pages of text, including the appendix. The first edition was published in 1827 and this is the second edition. John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States and a determined opponent of the secret society and fraternity of Freemasonry, the Masonic Lodge. Adams asserted that the teachings of the Lodge were detrimental, noxious, and unfortunate, and he was persuaded that the Masonic Lodge was a bane to society, evil, and Luciferian - straight from the Devil himself - and it ought to be abolished. The book was published shortly before his death in 1848 and measures 9 x 6 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean text, light offset on the leaf after page 284, loss on the crown and light wear on the heel of the spine and at the tips, and an unusual writing from someone who was the President of the United States. Historians believe that his views on Freemasonry might have cost him a second term as President. #1676 #35
