Frank Gallo was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1933. Early on he developed an interest in art, particularly in capturing the human form, studying anatomy on his own time in his early teens. He studied art from 1951 to 1955 at the University of Toledo, then spent two years at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He received his MFA from the State University of Iowa in 1959, and from 1960 onward was a professor of sculpture at the University of Illinois. While at the State University of Iowa he began to use polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass to give his sculpture a viscous finish. His work was often mildly erotic, with elongated figures that sat or reclined in postures suggesting extremes of boredom or self-involvement. Gallo also made lithographs using the same thematic material, creating unique embossed and raised images that bridge the gap between portrait painting and sculpture. He called this process “cast paper,” and taught his pioneering technique to generations of students. His first major solo exhibition was at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1964, and from then on he taught at his leisure, as he was able to support himself solely on commission. Although he is most well-known for his studies of women, some of whom are fancifully and colorfully clad, Gallo also made sculptures of men, including his own interpretation of President Abraham Lincoln. He was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1966, a National Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence in 1969, and the National Sculpture Society Annual Prize in 1992. Examples of his work are in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian, and the Los Angeles County Art Museum. He died at his home in Urbana, Illinois on March 22nd, 2019.
