Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (KG OM CH TD DL FRS RA) was born on November 30th, 1874 at his family’s ancestral home, Blenheim Palace, in Oxfordshire, England. His father was a member of the aristocracy, and his mother was the daughter of a successful American businessman. They were estranged for most of his life, and he grew up in the care of his nanny in Dublin, Ireland. His academic and behavioral performance early on were poor, and he wound up as a cadet at the Royal Military College in 1893. In 1895, the same year his father and nanny both died, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars of the British Army, and saw action in Cuba, Africa, and India. While stationed in India he began a program of “self-education,” learning about history, biology, politics, and much more while rejecting his Christian upbringing. Fiercely outspoken, a constant writer, and a lonely man who pursued ambition as a way to stave off overwhelming depression, he soon rose through British society due to his polymathic nature, becoming a celebrated statesman, military officer, and journalist even before the events of World War I. From 1900 onward he was a member of Parliament (MP) up to 1964, representing a total of five constituencies. He started in the Conservative Party, defecting from them to the Liberals in 1904. In H. H. Asquith’s Liberal government Churchill was president of the Board of Trade and Home Secretary, championing prison reform and workers’ social security. As First Lord of the Admiralty during World War I he oversaw the Gallipoli campaign, but was demoted to Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster after it proved a disaster. He resigned in November 1915 and joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front for six months. In 1917 he returned to government under David Lloyd George and served successively as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, and Secretary of State for the Colonies, overseeing the Anglo-Irish Treaty and British foreign policy in the Middle East. Ideologically an adherent to economic liberalism and imperialism, he was for most of his later career a member of the Conservative Party, returning to them after 1924 when he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in Stanley Baldwin’s Conservative government. He was responsible in 1925 for returning sterling to the gold standard, depressing the United Kingdom’s economy. Out of government during his so-called “wilderness years” in the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in calling for rearmament to counter the threat of militarism in Nazi Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1940 he became Prime Minister of England through World War II, succeeding Neville Chamberlain. Churchill formed a national government and oversaw British involvement in the Allied war effort against the Axis powers, resulting in victory in 1945. After the Conservatives’ defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition. Amid the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union, he publicly warned of an “iron curtain” of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. Between his terms, he wrote several books recounting his experience during the war. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. He lost the 1950 election but was returned to office in 1951. His second term was preoccupied with foreign affairs, especially Anglo-American relations and preservation of the British Empire since India had gained its freedom. Domestically, his government completed the development of a nuclear weapon, for which he expressed both great pride and great trepidation in equal amounts. In declining health, Churchill resigned in 1955, remaining an MP until 1964. When he died on January 24th, 1965, he was given a state funeral, and he has gone on to be acknowledged as one of the 20th Century’s most significant figures of the Anglosphere. He is viewed as one of the greatest prime ministers in British history, a victorious wartime leader who defended democracy against the spread of fascism and a liberal reformer who created the modern welfare state, but whose views on race and imperialism hampered Britain’s ability to adapt to global changes in the following decades.
