Important Fine Chinese Gilt Lacquer Qing Dynasty, with Imperial Cloissone mounts, signed cabinet from an Imperial collection. Decorated with five-toed dragon and Royal Imperial gilding only allowed for the collection of an Emperor. Ex collection of Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960) Explorer, Fossil Hunter, collector and Director of the American Museum of Natural History. For Many Years Dr. Andrews furnished an enormous house in Peking filled with Chinese antiquities. The choicest of these possessions were brought to his New York Penthouse apartment in the 1930's. During his time in China, Dr. Andrews traveled with a good friend, who was a Mongol Prince, directly descended from Genghis Khan. A good friend, he and Dr. Andrews spent many months together collecting from royal palaces in important Chinese collections. This cabinet is being offered for the first time since Dr. Andrews passing in Carmel California in 1960. The cabinet is photographed in the December 1933 issue of 'House Beautiful' Magazine titled "The Lore of the East Pervades the New York Apartment of Roy Chapman Andrews". Where it was identified as a Ming Chest made for an Emperor 400 years ago. Upon further inspection, we at Sarasota Estate Auction feel the Emperor's chest is likely a Qing Dynasty Antiquity. Roy Chapman Andrews is considered to be the inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones from the blockbuster movie trilogy "Indiana Jones", story written about the life of Dr. Andrews, the Explorer. Dimensions: 53 x 31 x 16.25 in.
