- Lot Description
Federico Mialhe (1810-1861) French, Antique Engraving. Titled: "Dia de Reyes".
This etching shows the annual festival held on 6 January with Africans and their descendants dancing and playing a repertoire of musical instruments openly in the streets of Havana, called the Holy Kingday.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Overall Size: 16 1/4 x 17 1/4 in.
Sight Size: 8 x 9 1/4 in.
Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe (1810–1881), also Federico Miahle, was a French painter and lithographer known for his detailed depictions of 19th-century Cuba. Born in Bordeaux, he arrived in Havana in 1838 under contract with the Real Sociedad Patriótica to document the island’s landscapes, architecture, and daily life. During his 15-year stay, he created extensive lithographic works, including the albums "Isla de Cuba Pintoresca" and "Viaje Pintoresco por la Isla de Cuba," which provided a vivid visual record of colonial Cuba. His illustrations captured the island’s urban and rural settings with remarkable detail, making his work an essential historical reference on Cuban society of that era.
