Eve Von Neumann was born in London, England in 1907. She majored in art at the Croydon School of Art in the 1920s, then attended the Slade School of Art in the 1930s. It was there that she met Francis Von Neumann (1883-1976), an expatriate artist who had fled Austria as the Nazis began to gain power, who was working as a professor. Although over 20 years his junior, they were married in 1937 in order to protect him from deportation. Much of their early work and property were destroyed during the London Blitz, and after World War II they traveled Europe and then Canada extensively. In 1950 they settled in Marin, California, where Eve and Francis both found a sense of family in the artist community. Eve became a member of the Marin Society of Artists in 1956, and devoted much of her time to painting post-Impressionist still lifes and landscapes, as well as caring for Francis after a stroke left him unable to care for himself in 1960. After he passed away in 1976, she remarried to Robert Davidson in the early 1980s, and continued to paint at their home in San Anselmo until her death on October 6th, 1991. She is remembered for her colorful abstract images, and was a highly regarded Bay Area artist during her lifetime, with her work still found in galleries and private collections around Central California.
