Eugene F. Hollander, best known as “Gino” Hollander, was born in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey. His father was highly successful in the fur business, and the family traveled a lot, including a nine-month stay in Europe where Hollander was first exposed to art and the Old Masters. At the age of 13 he embarked on a 1,000-mile biking trip up the Connecticut River Valley, alone, which heavily contributed to his sense of adventure and outlook on life. In 1943 he joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado as part of their ski troops, and served in the Italian Alps during World War II, twice wounded and decorated. When he returned to America he entered into an arranged marriage and went to work for his father’s company, but was unhappy and restless. He decided to study filmmaking after having observed the newsreels and camera operators attached to companies throughout the war, and moved to Greenwich Village, New York City in 1951. He met his second wife, Barbara, who introduced him to the world of documentary and commercial filmmaking. She was the one who gave him the name “Gino,” and through her he also explored the diverse art scene of the City, where he became enamored with the blossoming figurative abstract expressionist movement. He taught himself to paint in the early 1960s, becoming part of a group that hung out at the famous Cedar Tavern. One of the first to experiment with the full potential of acrylic paints, he created a studio and the first Hollander Gallery on Bleecker Street from 1960 to 1962. During that time he developed a core following as his paintings sold to the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy, Steve McQueen, Norman Rockwell, and Ralph Lauren. Despite this quick initial success in New York, Hollander was unhappy with his craft, and moved his family to Spain in 1962 to “find his voice in painting.” He often bartered paintings to support his family while he continued developing his style. Hollander and Barbara took their children on archaeological trips, following the road construction crews which were building new highways throughout Spain, unearthing ancient treasures. They created Museo Hollander on the outskirts of Málaga (later renamed Pizarra Municipal Museum), located in an old Cortijo. The museum was to exhibit a collection of Spanish artifacts along with Hollander’s own paintings, and was his base of operations for decades while he held one man shows throughout Europe. In 1990 the Hollanders donated their museum to the government of Spain and were awarded a Medallion de Plata for contributing to the country’s growth in tourism, before returning to America. Hollander virtually disappeared from the art world for nearly twenty years, living and working reclusively in Aspen, Colorado. After developing lung issues he moved with his wife to Ojai, California in 2009, where his health continued to worsen. He passed away in Newport Beach in 2015, having created over 11,000 paintings in his working life, many of which are still in private collections and museums around the world.
