Eugène-Louis Véder was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France in 1876. Little is known of his early life, but his work first began to appear after World War I, suggesting that his earliest works were lost during it. In the 1900s he was in Paris, where he became enamored with the work of the Impressionists, particularly the painter and sculptor Jean-François Raffaëlli. Although none of these early pieces have been discovered, records show he exhibited watercolors of the countryside at the Salon des Indépendants of 1912, and became represented by the art dealer Durant-Ruel. In the 1920s his favorite subject became Paris, where he produced many enhanced engravings and set up a studio on the Place de l’Estrapade. He exhibited with the Salon des Artistes Français starting in 1922, becoming a member of the society, and received a bronze medal in 1923 and a silver in 1925. From 1923 on his works were shown frequently at the Musée Carnavalet, and the publisher Albert Morancé included some of his works in the Byblis Review. In 1928 he produced a series of 50 plates on the popular Parisian districts that the National Museums acquired in 1930 for the chalcography of the Louvre. In 1936, while sketching the Tour de France for a new series of etchings, he was caught in torrential rain during the first stage and came down with pneumonia. He died less than a month later in his studio, and many of his works were rediscovered after World War II and the rebuilding of France began.
Commensurate with age.
