Early 20th Century Chinese Carved Soapstone Inkstone and Brush Vase. Hand carved soapstone inkstone with attached brush pots resembling a collection of small pots with sprig of foliage over ink basin.
A Chinese inkstone is a traditional tool used for grinding and containing ink in Chinese calligraphy and painting. Made from fine-grained stone, clay, or ceramic, inkstones feature a smooth, shallow surface where solid ink sticks are ground with water to produce liquid ink. The best inkstones, such as those from Duan, She, and Taohe, are highly prized for their durability and ability to preserve ink's consistency. Inkstones often have intricate carvings and decorative elements, reflecting their status as both functional objects and works of art. They have been essential to Chinese scholars and artists for centuries, symbolizing refinement and intellectual pursuit.
