Doris Day was born Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff on April 3rd, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She developed an early interest in dance, and was part of a dance team that was performing nationwide, but when she was involved in a train collision in 1937 that broke her leg she shifted her focus to singing. She changed her last name to Day in 1939 and had her first big break singing for the troops during World War II. In the late 1940s she began acting in light musicals for Warner Bros., and throughout the 50s and 60s she rose to become one of the leading Hollywood film stars. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Pillow Talk opposite Rock Hudson in 1959, who became one of her most regular co-stars along with James Garner and Clark Gable. Sadly, after her third husband Martin Melcher died in 1968 she discovered that he and his business partner had squandered all her earnings, leaving her deeply in debt. Her last feature, With Six You Get Eggroll, was released that same year, and she was committed by a contract arranged by her dead husband to a television series that became The Doris Day Show, which ran until 1973. After finally being able to pay off her debts she retired almost completely from acting, but was hounded throughout the 80s and 90s by the business partner who had swindled her and her husband, dealing with lawsuit after lawsuit. She made few public appearances and declined tributes from the American Film Institute and the Kennedy Center Honors because she would have to attend in person, but accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush in 2004. She received a Grammy and Golden Globe for Lifetime Achievement in 2008, but turned down numerous Honorary Academy Awards, insisting that the film industry was part of her past life. She also garnered widespread acclaim for her activism, particularly for founding the Doris Day Animal League (now a part of the Humane Society) and for HIV/AIDS awareness efforts in honor of her beloved co-star Hudson. Day died on May 13th, 2019 in Carmel Valley, California, still one of the top box-office earners in history.
