Don Juan by Lord Byron 1926.
Size: 10 1/4 x 7 in.
This epic poem by Lord Byron is titled Don Juan, published in 1926 in London by John Lane at The Bodley Head and in New York by Dodd Mead, and it is a first edition thus. The original was written by Byron between 1819 and 1824, when Byron died. The book has 93 illustrations in black and white by John Austen, and some of the illustrations are erotic.
Lord Byron (1788 - 1824) was a British poet and peer and one of the major figures of the Romantic movement, and even though he lived a short life, was regarded as one of the greatest British poets of all time, and Don Juan was one of his best known works. The book was written in sixteen cantos and the first two cantos caused great criticism because Byron had ridiculed social subjects and public figures, and he died before the final canto (canto xvii) was finished.
The book was an epic poem that portrayed the Spanish folk legend Don Juan not as womanizer, but as a victim easily seduced by women, and even though the character of Don Juan came from Spanish folk lore, the story was very much Byron’s.
John Austen (1886 - 1948) was a British book illustrator who studied art in London and worked in the style of Aubrey Beardsley to start with, then turned to Art Deco around 1925. He used different techniques in his illustrations, including wood engraving and scraper board, and he changed styles to suit the text he was illustrating.
The book measures 10 1/4 x 7 inches wide and is in very good condition. It has gilt lettering and a gilt image on the spine, gilt lettering and a brown and beige image on the cover, blank endpapers, a half-title, a frontis drawing of Don Juan in Austen’s Art Deco style, then the title page, the copyright page which says published in 1926 and printed in Great Britain by R. Clay & Sons, a dedication from v to viii, a fragment of Canto I, a Contents page listing sixteen cantos, a List of Full Page Illustrations (17 in all, counting the frontispiece), 395 pages of text and Notes that run to page 408. The book has deckled edges and all the illustrations are in black and white.
The binding is tight, with faint soiling on the covers, faint brown spots here and there (they seem more yellow than brown), a small pencil note on the front endpaper, minor yellowing on the endpapers, and we found only three copies of this title listed online.
