David Salk was born in Palm Springs, California in 1949. His family moved around the Southwest and California in particular, which exposed him to many different environments as well as a variety of art forms early on. He became interested in basketweaving in his teens, but found his passion in ceramics, earning his degree at the Laguna College of Art and Design. After studying with Maria Martinez, a famous potter from San Ildefonso, at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts in the early 1970s, his studies of Acoma pottery helped him define his shapes, which he refers to as “clay baskets.” He researches and painstakingly reproduces the intricate designs and coiled shapes of early 19th Century Southwest baskets, incorporating them into his pottery using iron oxide, and his work has been recognized for its accuracy by the Museum of National History in Santa Barbara. Today, he continues to make functional and decorative pottery at his home studio, and his works are in collections all over the United States, as well as Europe, Asia, and Africa. In addition to winning numerous awards throughout the Southwest, he has had solo shows at galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sedona, Arizona, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Alexandria, Virginia, and Springdale, Utah, in addition to countless others in his native California.
