Daniel Wall was born in a small village in northern China in 1965. He began drawing and painting at the age of four, after his aunt, an elementary school teacher, snuck home chalk and pencils for him to use. His mother, a self-taught artist, always encouraged him to pursue his passion. Wall took every opportunity to draw or paint after school, earning numerous art awards in his youth. At 16 years old he received a government scholarship to study art at Laiyang Teachers College, an academy that only accepts a handful of students every year. It was here that he was first exposed to Western style art, and was particularly influenced by the early Impressionists and the Fauves. Following his graduation in 1983, Wall worked as a full-time art professor in the Teacher’s College to pay for furthering his education at Shandong University of Arts, graduating from there in 1987. During this time he created an innovative style called Intense Impressionism, using Chinese dry-brush calligraphy and painting techniques combined with modern materials to bring the 19th Century look into the present with vivid colors, heavy textures, and joyful symbolism. The addition of a palette knife to the process solidified his technique, and he worked for a year as an illustrator and fine art editor for the “Fire Fighter Journal” of Shandong Province, gaining national prominence as their issues became sought after throughout the country. Seeking greater opportunities and artistic freedom, Wall and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1995, where he earned a Masters in mathematics with a concentration on computer science from Georgia Southern University. However, he continued to make art in the meanwhile, and after being discovered by a representative of Park West Gallery he chose to focus on art full time. They moved to Florida, where he drew inspiration from the ocean views and tropical landscapes, producing pieces that fused classic Asian techniques, European styles, and American views into a one-of-a-kind synthesis. He began to make yearly travels to Italy to study the architecture and culture, which further influenced his work, and began teaching at various colleges around the United States, which led to his work being successfully exhibited and sold at auctions and through television programs. In 2006 he, his wife, and their son moved to North Carolina, where he continues to make art and she works as a professor at East Carolina University. His works are widely collected by many corporations and celebrities, and have been used in Hallmark movies, with a permanent display at his alma mater in Shandong and gallery representation throughout the world.
