Contemporary of Norman Rockwell Exceptional Execution of Early 20C Cover Illustration by world renowned Illustrator Cushman Parker. This is a rare and scarce sporting subject, making this piece collectible to a multitude of buyers. Cushman Parker departed for France in 1900 to train at the Academie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), remaining there through at least 1902. He also studied with the American painter Carl Marr. Parker had returned to the United States by 1904, when his work begins to appear regularly in prominent American publications.
As an illustrator, he used a shortened version of his rather long name, "Cushman Parker." One of his first big breaks was his selection to illustrate Anthony Hopes short story, "Mrs. Thistelton's Princess," which was published in Metropolitan Magazine in 1904. The following year, his works began appearing in both Good Housekeeping and The Outing magazine (a cover that year). In 1906 he illustrated the December cover of both The Outing and Good Housekeeping, the later which was noted as hinting at "…the keynotes of the richness within." It is not surprising that his works became very popular, and according to the Norman Rockwell Museum, "between August 1905 and September 1910 Cushman Parker produced 18 cover illustrations for Good Housekeeping magazine." Many of these covers featured lovely women and mothers, and/or young children, but it was his depictions of children which would become a hallmark of his work.
