Crossbow, Burl Fruitwood and Steel. Engraved decorations covering it.
Size: 35 X 29 X 4 in.
#5344 .
A crossbow is a ranged weapon using an elastic launching device. It consists of a bow-shaped assembly mounted horizontally on a main frame which is hand-held in a similar fashion to the stock of a rifle. Crossbows shoot arrow-like projectiles called bolts or quarrels. While an archer using a longbow must maintain its draw by pulling it back with arm and back muscles, demanding significant physical strength, a crossbowman uses a locking mechanism to maintain the draw, limiting the shooter’s exertion to pulling the string into the lock and then releasing the shot by depressing a trigger. This enables a crossbowman to handle more draw weight with significantly less physical strain, achieving better precision and enabling their effective use by less-skilled personnel. The earliest known crossbows were made as early as the 7th Century BC in ancient China and as early as the 1st Century AD in Greece. Though bows and crossbows are no longer used on the field of battle, they remain widely used for competitive sports and hunting. This piece has many home-made personalization markings, and was clearly adored and cared for well by the previous owner.
