"Conflict" Framed Film Poster. "Conflict" is a 1945 American black-and-white suspense film noir made by Warner Brothers. It was directed by Curtis Bernhardt and starred Humphrey Bogart, Alexis Smith, and Sydney Greenstreet at the height of all their careers. It made nearly $3 million profit for Warner Brothers, and although Bogart vocally detested the script (particularly after having won an Academy Award for his last film, “Casablanca”) it is considered one of his better complicated villain roles.

A film poster is a specific type of poster used to promote and advertise a film, primarily to paying customers. Studios often print several posters that vary in size and content for various domestic and international markets. They normally contain an image with text, and have consistently featured illustrated or printed likenesses of the main actors, although more abstract themes and styles have emerged since the latter half of the 20th Century. The text usually contains the film title in large lettering and often the names of the main actors, and may also include a tagline, the name of the director, names of characters, the release date, and other pertinent details to inform prospective viewers about the film. Film posters are often displayed inside and on the outside of movie theaters, and the same image usually finds further use in presskits, on websites, in magazines and newspapers, and on physical media as well as streaming services, creating consistency and memorability. The earliest film posters appeared almost concurrent with the dawn of cinema, with the first specific film promoted (rather than simply being an advert for a “magic lantern show”) being the Lumiere Brothers “L’Arroseur arrose” at the Grand Cafe in Paris on December 29th, 1895. At first distributors produced their own posters for individual theaters to exhibit, and these were required to be returned after the film left the theater to the National Screen Service (NSS), which regularly recycled or simply threw them away. From the 1980s onward American film studios increasingly took over production of their own posters, but as Hollywood cinema was disseminated to foreign markets distinct hand-painted film poster traditions arose in Europe, Asia, and South America. Lobby cards, teaser posters, and character posters are the most common forms, with many variants over the decades for regional and economic reasons. Film posters have become increasingly coveted by art collectors for many reasons, primarily their quality, condition, creator, rarity, and historical significance. An original German poster for Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” from 1927 (one of only four known to have survived) sold for $690,000 in 2005, still listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest selling film poster of all time.
