Claude Harrison was born in Leyland, Lancashire, England on March 31st, 1922. He was interested in art from a young age, particularly continental works inspired by the posters and illustrations of turn-of-the-century France, and studied at Preston College of Art in 1939 and the Liverpool College of Art in 1941. He joined the Royal Air Force during World War II, and was stationed in India, Burma, and China where he was further inspired by temple paintings, woodblocks, and painted scrolls. Upon returning to England he attended the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1950. He married the artist Audrey Johnson in 1947 and had a son, the potter Tobias Harrison. He was well known in his lifetime throughout the United Kingdom as a painter of murals, conversation pieces, and imaginative groups of harlequins and masked figures with tempera as his preferred medium. He held numerous solo and mixed exhibitions at the Contemporary Fine Art Gallery at Eton, the Phoenix Gallery Highgate, and the Royal Academy. Harrison illustrated The Book of Tobit in 1969, and held a handful of solo exhibitions in America in the 1970s before moving to a home studio in Menton, France, where he worked until his death on September 13th, 2009. His work is on permanent display in art galleries throughout Preston, Kendal, and Lancaster, as well as in the National Galleries of Scotland and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut.
