Classic Edition Reproduction of England vs. Australia 1882 Cricket Match Archived Ephemera. Printed reproduction of various pieces of ephemera from the 1882 cricket match between England and Australia, "The Birth of the Ashes", including the batting order notes for both teams, scorecards, mock obituary for English cricket, and photograph of the 'ashes urn'. CoA recto. Unnumbered edition. Framed.
The 1882 cricket match between Australia and England at The Oval is famously known as the match that "gave birth" to the Ashes rivalry. Australia secured a shocking seven-run victory over England, marking their first Test win on English soil. The defeat was so unexpected that a mock obituary was published in The Sporting Times, lamenting "the death of English cricket" and stating that "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." This satirical piece led to the creation of the Ashes urn, symbolizing the fierce Test series rivalry between the two nations that continues to this day.
