Civil War newspaper: The New York Times, Friday, March 27, 1863. Vol. XII - No. 3590. The newspaper came out less than three months before the Battle of Gettysburg. Some highlights on the front page: Admiral Farragut recaptures the Indianola near Port Hudson. Port Hudson was in Louisiana, and Farragut’s activities near Port Hudson were part of an attempt by the Union to control the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in two. Farragut was noted for saying “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” There’s a second article about the invasion of Kentucky by Union troops, and a long article about the marriage of Albert, the Prince of Wales, at Windsor Castle (March 10, 1863). Albert’s mother was Queen Victoria, and the article describes the wedding and wedding procession in great detail. The newspaper is bright and clean, there appears to be no foxing, and is very well preserved.Frame size is about 20 1/2” x 16 1/2”. Sight size is 19 1/2” x 15 1/4” and image size is 16” x 11”
