Chinese Qing Dynasty Style Silk Sleeveband. Multi-colored matching floral patterns on both ends of the blue fabric.
Size: 54 x 13 in.
#6109 .
In 1644 the Manchus, a nomadic horseriding people in Northern Asia, overthrew the Ming Dynasty and gradually gained control over the rest of China. They doubled the size of the empire and their rule lasted nearly as long, known as the Qing Dynasty. The Manchus developed a court costume which was a hybrid mix of their own nomadic traditions and those of the sedentary silk-weaving Han people. During the previous Ming Dynasty the indigenous Han women had embroidered the cuffs of their robes and this idea was adopted by the Manchus when they came to power. Women tended to fold their arms in front at waist level with their hands through the sleeves, which allowed the embroidery to show down the front. It is not known when the Han first began to embroider their sleevebands, but surviving images from the Liao Dynasty (916-1125) suggest that their new Khitan rulers enforced stricter dress codes on the Han people, and the embroidery may have appeared then as a sort of rebellion against the austerity forced upon them. By the end of the Qing Dynasty sleevebands had expanded into a wide variety of fabrics and techniques, with silk damask, plain satin, or silk and cotton blends the most common. The most prized technique of all Chinese textiles was woven Kesi “cut silk,” which took much longer to weave than to embroider and could be made reversible, and simple floral patterns had expanded to include a wide variety of animals and even historical scenes adorning what were once simple scarf-length pieces of cloth. Today, the style continues to be seen in some parts of China as well as Taiwan, as a direct reaction to the more uniform adornment that appeared under the Republic of China.
