The hsiang-chung (incense or "fragrance" clock) is a timekeeping device that originated from China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and spread to neighboring East Asian countries such as Japan and Korea. The clocks bodies are effectively specialized censers that hold incense sticks or powdered incense which have been manufactured and calibrated to a known rate of combustion, used to measure minutes, hours, or days. Incense seals, sticks and spirals were used for religious time telling, keeping the time during festivals and important rituals. Incense clocks were also commonly used in residential homes, as well as temples that did not have clepsydras (water clocks). The material to make them is primarily a copper alloy known as baitong or paktong, also known as nickel silver. The top tier is usually fitted with a vented lid, and is inset with a removable tray, used to outline the pattern of the incense powder in the sand. The bottom tier stores a miniature shovel, a square stamping tool and a shaped cutting device.
