Chinese Carved Jade Belt Buckle. Carved jade square with hooks to attach to belt, with incise floral decoration.
Chinese jade has been revered for thousands of years as a symbol of purity, virtue, and immortality, playing a central role in Chinese art and culture. Used since the Neolithic period, jade—particularly nephrite and later jadeite—was crafted into ritual objects, ornaments, and intricate carvings depicting mythical creatures, nature motifs, and auspicious symbols. The material’s toughness and translucent beauty made it ideal for delicate, highly polished works. During the Qing Dynasty, jadeite from Burma became especially prized, leading to elaborate imperial pieces. Even today, jade remains a significant material in Chinese jewelry and collectibles, valued both for its aesthetic appeal and cultural significance.
