Chinese Barrel Drum (Tanggu), Wood and Pigskin. Red wood with attached handle.
Size: 8 3/4 X 2 X 17 in.
#5379 .
The taogu is a Chinese ceremonial drum that developed during the Shang Dynasty (1766-1122 BC). It is a double-headed rattle-drum membranophone and was first associated with Confucian ritual practices. If a taogu is single headed, it is likely not ritualistic and simply a novelty noisemaker. To sound the taogu the handle is placed in the palms of the player’s hands, and strings of beads are attached which are then stimulated when the handle is rubbed back and forth. The resulting rotating motion of the drum shell centrifugally propels the beads in such a way as to strike the heads in rapid succession, making a rattling sound. A variant known as the tanggu appeared during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-535 AD). It is barrel-shaped with two heads made of animal skin, and is played with two sticks rather than by attaching strung beads. The tanggu is usually suspended by four rings in a wooden stand, but smaller hand-held versions are still used today in contemporary Chinese orchestras and ceremonies.
