Charles Hollis Jones was born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1945 to a family of hardworking farmers. He moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of 16 and founded CHJ Designs. At the time, acrylic and plastic were not commonly used as a material for upscale furniture and art, but Jones began creating pieces for showrooms such as Hudson-Rissman, incorporating them into traditional glass and steel motifs. Their unique style caught the eye of celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and Johnny Carson, whose commissions intrigued Tennessee Williams. The writing chair he designed for the aging playwright became a perennial favorite known as the Wisteria Chair. In the 1970s he developed the Edison Lamp, using original Edison bulbs and using steel and lucite to display the inner workings of the inventor’s technology. His work was featured at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena as well as the Smithsonian, and earned him recognition and awards for his pioneering acrylic designs. Today he resides in Burbank, continuing to innovate and develop his style for the new Millennium.
