Caleb Nichols (b. 1959) American, Art Glass Sculpture. Three isolated but similar swirled slabs of glass on a flat glass base. Signed and dated 1994 on base. Likely from his exhibition at the Galleria of Sculpture, Palm Beach, Florida.
Size: 17 x 8 x 3 1/2 in.
#4340 .
Caleb Nichols was born in 1959 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Growing up in the sparsely populated but tourism-driven seaside town introduced him to many different kinds of people and ways of life early on, as well as generating a deep appreciation for art and the ocean. A child prodigy, he learned several languages, played two musical instruments, and found himself torn between the arts and science for a career choice. He enrolled in the small private Franklin University in Lugano, Switzerland, where the average class size was around 16 people and he found the ability to explore multiple subjects at once with ease. Through their Academic Travel Program he saw much of Europe and was able to complete his Associates in 1979, at which time he chose to complete his Bachelors at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. While studying Studio Arts he spent nearly all of his time in the Newcomb Art building, and discovered an abandoned cache of stained glass windows in their attic that turned out to be original Tiffany glass, long thought lost. He organized an effort to help the University refurbish the pieces and build a museum to house them in. The experience led him to his calling, and he began to focus all his efforts on art glass, repurposing Tiffany techniques to craft his own pieces. After graduating in 1981 he returned to Massachusetts, settling there permanently and opening his own studio, Brimstone Glassworks, in Staughton. He continues to exhibit his work around the world, with one major solo show each year since 1986, and his pieces are found in countless private collections and museums throughout New England.
