In 1805 in Heilbronn, Germany, silversmith Georg Peter Bruckmann (1778-1850) took over the workshop of his father, Johann Dietrich Bruckmann (1736-1807), who was in ill health. He changed the name to Bruckmann & Sohne (Bruckmann & Son) and kept the name even after his father passed away two years later. In 1810 Bruckmann first used self-made steel stamps in for embossing silverware, and the company’s products were exhibited at fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig, garnering national attention. In 1820 they continued to promote technical innovations in metalware manufacture by installing the first silverware press of its size, and in 1839 metal processing machines from Alfred Krupp were introduced into the factory. When Bruckmann died he left a growing and flowering hollowware and flatware manufactory to his sons Wolfgang Peter Bruckmann (1818-1891) and Ernst Dietrich Bruckmann (1829-1870). After the death of Ernst Dietrich Bruckmann the business was continued by his widow Pauline, along with Wolfgang. Ernst’s two sons, Ernst II and Peter, took over the company in 1887, and together they created a new factory in Lerchenstraße, effectively doubling their enterprise. The original factory was destroyed in World War I, and the second factory in World War II, and although a new factory was constructed in the 1950 the business struggled in the Cold War era and was eventually sold to Gerofabriek NV in 1968. All production was transferred to a new facility in Neckarsulm by 1970, but a serious of poor business decisions led the company to bankruptcy in 1973. The maker’s mark for their silver wares was the “Eagle with spread wings and legs.” while for plated flatware the “Locomotive” symbol was used.
Good.
