Bruce Holwerda was born in a rural community in Michigan in 1954, with no exposure to art until he was in high school. His art teacher encouraged him to draw and paint with acrylics, and helped him apply for a scholarship to Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids. After obtaining a diploma for illustration he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Utica College, then a part of Syracuse University in New York. He returned to Michigan and worked as an illustrator for a magazine in Saginaw for the next ten years, before his position was phased out. Torn between finding a new job, teaching, or trying his hand at independent art full time, he opted to start showing his original work at local art festivals, and after winning first prize at two of them in his first year he decided to devote himself to his craft. His pieces often show costumed, mime-like figures in dynamic poses and movement through stark but chaotic landscapes, combining elements of cartooning with real-life studies of clowning to develop a unique style. Along with his wife Jill he continues to work out of home studios in Michigan, Alabama, and New York, and his work can be found in corporate and private collections around the country, including Dow Chemicals, General Motors, Meijer Corporation, and Scholastic.
