Brett Amory was born in 1975 in Chesapeake, Virginia. He grew up working lots of odd jobs but rarely for very long, eventually deciding to pursue being an artist fulltime as it was “the only thing left to do.” He moved to San Francisco, California in 1996 to study film at the Academy of Art University. After struggling with film for almost four years, he discovered a passion for painting during pre-production of his thesis project. He abandoned film and took a year to teach himself how to paint, before re-enrolling at the Academy. During this time he conceived the “Waiting” series, an ongoing set of paintings made with oil directly on wood panels, capturing the isolation and energy of city life, with over 400 paintings to date since 2001, making it one of the longest continuous art series in history. He received his BFA in 2005 in Painting, and relocated to Oakland in 2009, where he continues to work. Much of his work shows figures and places that are based on photographs the artist took of ordinary city architecture and random people, particularly in the Tenderloin neighborhood. He has grown to include many forms of media in his work, including collage, gouache, acrylic, and found-object constructs. Since 2010 he has had solo shows throughout California, as well as at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Indiana. In 2017 he was the artist in residence for the deYoung Museum in San Francisco, which led to an exhibition in New York City where his entire catalog was sold. He received an MFA from Stanford University in 2020, and his works are highly sought by collectors around the world.
