Borge Ball was born in Kolding, Denmark in 1906, where he lived nearly his entire life. As a youth he began sketching the windswept hills around his home, eventually acquiring an easel and painting tools when he was ten by working odd jobs around his town. He studied at the Technical Institute in 1924, and then the Copenhagen Academy in 1928. He spent the first half of the 1930s in Paris painting alongside Ferdinand Humbert, who vouched for and invited him to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1934, becoming a member of the society. As war with the Nazis loomed he returned to Denmark, which was occupied by them in September of 1939 even though the country had tried to remain neutral. He spent the War and the remainder of his life painting primarily the Danish countryside, and became known as one of the leading landscape painters in Denmark, although he was never well known outside the country, having lost most of his French artistic connections to the Holocaust or the cultural diaspora. He passed away in his ancestral home in 1979.
Good.
