Betty Carolyn Kaiser (nee Powers) was born on March 27th, 1921 in Beloit, Wisconsin. As a young girl she was introduced to watercolors by her mother. She enrolled in the private women’s academy Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1939, and met Charles Robert “Bob” Kaiser while attending the local Methodist church. She married him in November 1941, shortly before he was shipped overseas with the US Navy to both the European and Pacific Theaters. While he was away she gave birth to a son who died in infancy. To cope with the grief she became an active Girl Scout member, mentoring young women in the camping program, as well as immersing herself in artistic pursuits. When Bob returned they moved to Overland Park in 1947, where he went to work as an engineer for Air Hydraulics and she began to offer art lessons at home. With her encouragement, he took up painting as well, and they both became lifetime members of the Greater Kansas City Art Association, exhibiting works in art fairs all over the Midwest. In 1984 they moved to Olathe to be closer to their daughter, and they both continued to make art, primarily watercolors, until Bob’s death in 1997. It is unclear if she continued to paint after his death, and she passed away as well in December 2009.
