Artist Biography:
Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was a prominent French painter and a leading figure of post-World War II Expressionism. Known for his stark, angular style and melancholic subjects, Buffet often depicted figures, still lifes, and landscapes using sharp lines and muted colors. He rose to fame at a young age and became associated with the *miserabilist* movement, which emphasized themes of despair and human suffering. Despite his success in the 1950s and 60s, his style later fell out of favor with critics, though his work remained popular with collectors. Buffet's prolific career included more than 8,000 pieces, and he was also known for creating religious works and illustrations for literary publications. He died by suicide in 1999, reportedly due to health issues that impacted his ability to paint. - Shipping Info
