Barry Leighton-Jones was born in London in 1932. He won his first art contest at the age of 5, and although there are rumors he is descended from a former president of the Royal Academy named Frederic Leighton, these likely came later in life as a way to account for his prodigious early talent. His youth was impoverished and fraught with peril, as he was nearly killed twice during the Blitz, but it instilled in him a desire to seize every moment like there would never be another and overcome any obstacle. After years of study at both Sidcup School of Art and Brighton College, Leighton-Jones took private instruction at the Royal College of Art from John Minton. He enjoyed immense success in Britain’s art scene, with paintings and prints of street urchins being his first bestselling subject, captured in vibrant colors with realistic features. In 1980 he immigrated to America to seek out an international audience, and in 1985 he achieved this goal when he was commissioned by the family of famed clown Emmett Kelly to paint his portrait. It became a career-defining moment, and he remained the official artist of Kelly for the next two decades. He lived with his wife and family first in New York City and then sought quieter places when fame grew so quickly, settling first in Helen, Georgia and finally Plantation Acres, Florida. In the early 2000s his fortunes and health took a turn for the worse, and after his divorce he returned to Britain, settling with family in Fowey, Cornwall where he continued to paint until his death on November 20th, 2011. Today his extensive series of memorable paintings that deftly captured the tragicomic lives of clowns are some of the most recognizable on the subject, and are found in public, private, and corporate collections all over the world.
