In 1890 an immigrant from the Netherlands named Siebe Baker founded an interior woodwork and door company in the small town of Allegan, Michigan. Three years later they produced their first piece of furniture, a combination desk and bookcase that was considerably ahead of its time. Hollis S. Baker, Siebe’s son, came to visit the company after graduating from the University of Michigan in 1910 and realized his father’s obsession with perfection and quality was nearly bankrupting him. Joining as a salesman, he helped improve efficiency while maintaining his father’s high standards, and took over as president when his father died in 1925. That same year he introduced the Art Deco “Twentieth Century Shop,” collaborating with designers Donald Deskey, Joseph Urban, and Kem Weber over the next few years to craft bedroom and living room sets that profoundly impacted the modern furniture movement in America. In 1932, fighting the Great Depression, they created the Manor House collection, the first great historical furniture reproduction program in the United States, focusing on French Empire, Federalist, and Victorian styles. In 1934 Baker was invited to the Chicago World’s Fair and introduced a line of Chinese Modern furniture which became their most popular selection until World War II began. In 1941 a museum was constructed in the original factory with 1,500 original antiques collected by Hollis, making it the largest private furniture collection in the world. Their Far East Collection, introduced in 1949, was quickly followed by Italian neoclassic designs for the Palladian Collection and a direct collaboration with acclaimed designer Finn Juhl to create the Danish Modern line. In 1957 Baker acquired the Grand Rapids Chair Company and began producing an assortment of simpler, less costly furniture under the Milling Road label. Hollis M. Baker took over the company after his father’s death in 1961, finding new niches in the luxury market and introducing a wealth of new collections. Baker opened a new manufacturing facility in Mockville, North Carolina, and began to focus on Country English and French Provincial furniture, as well as high-end executive desks. The Woburn Abbey Collection, introduced in 1969, featured 25 pieces styled after English antiques of the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. In 1972, due to financial turmoil, Baker merged with a leading showroom network to form Baker, Knapp & Tubbs, still one of the largest wholesale distributors in the industry. A year later it entered the upholstery business with a new plant and division located in High Point, North Carolina, and in 1976 the company launched the Historic Charleston Collection, drawing inspiration from one of the most fashionable and furniture-forward capitals of the New World. In 1986 Baker Furniture was acquired by Kohler Company and made into the cornerstone of its Interior Group. Multiple new collections, as well as successful reintroductions of their most popular lines, were a hallmark up into the new Millennium, with international showrooms opening in Paris, Moscow, Singapore, and China, and the company remains strong since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Exquisite.
