Audrey Kathleen Hepburn was born on May 4th, 1929 in Ixelles, a municipality of Brussels, Belgium. Her mother was a Dutch noblewoman and her father a British subject originally from Bohemia. She led a sheltered and privileged childhood that exposed her to numerous languages, countries, and cultures early on. When her parents separated due to their differing opinions on Fascism she was sent to a private school in England and did not see her father again until the 1960s, an event that profoundly affected her all her life. In 1939 she went to live with her mother in Arnhem, in the hopes the Netherlands would remain neutral in World War II. Hepburn attended the Arnhem Conservatory until the end of the war, becoming a star ballet dancer and going by the name Edda van Heemstra to avoid drawing attention from the occupying Germans. Her uncle was executed in 1942 as a warning to the resistance movement, with one of her half-brothers deported to a German labor camp in Berlin. Suffering from severe malnutrition during the Dutch Famine caused by the worsening war in 1944, she developed jaundice, anemia, edema, and a respiratory infection, saved from death only by a desperate black market acquisition of penicillin. After the war the family fortune was completely gone, but she trained formally in ballet in Amsterdam, supported by her mother working as a cook for a wealthy family. In 1948 she moved to London after accepting a scholarship to Ballet Rambert in Notting Hill. When told by the teachers that despite her talent she would never attain prima ballerina status due to her short stature and weak constitution, she decided to concentrate fully on acting instead. She worked in several West End musicals and took elocution lessons to develop her voice, eventually becoming fluent in six languages. She began appearing in British film and television productions, which led to her Broadway debut in Gigi in 1951. The show was an overnight success and led to her breakout film role in Roman Holiday opposite Gregory Peck in 1953, which won her an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, making her the first to ever win all three awards for a single performance. In 1954 she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Ondine, the same year she received her second Academy Award nomination and married her Broadway co-star Mel Ferrer. She and Ferrer had one son after suffering two miscarriages, and they divorced in 1968. Her second husband was Italian doctor Andrea Dotti, who she married in 1969 and had a son with the following year. After their marriage dissolved in 1982 she spent her remaining years with Dutch actor Robert Wolders, but they never married. She was nominated five times in total for the Oscars but never won again, although she was posthumously awarded an Emmy and a Grammy Award, making her one of only 27 people to ever achieve the coveted EGOT distinction. Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s she remained a fashion icon, influencing clothing, hairstyles, and modern celebrity product endorsement. Her roles in Sabrina, Funny Face, Charade, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and My Fair Lady contributed to her being ranked the third greatest female actress of Classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute. Late in her life she devoted most of her time to UNICEF, working in some of the poorest communities in Africa, South America, and Asia, and she received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. By the time she died from appendix cancer at her home in Tolochenaz, Switzerland on January 20th, 1993 she was one of the most famous and beloved women on earth.
