Arthur James Menchego was born February 10th, 1950 at Ta-Ma-Ya (Santa Ana Pueblo) into the White Cloud Eagle Clan (Bald Eagle) of the Tamaya Pueblo tribe in Sandoval County, New Mexico. The name given him at birth was “Ka-Whe-Tewa,” which means “where there is snow” in the Pueblo language. While his parents instructed him in English and gave him an Anglicized name to help him in school, Menchego learned about his ancestral culture and traditions from his grandmother. In his youth, he began to record and illustrate those learned and shared experiences in drawings, then slowly expanded to explore oils and watercolors. In 1980 he committed to his craft as full-time, professional artist. Menchego’s work often mixes contemporary with traditional Native American cultural themes, and many of his pieces feature strong Native figures and wildlife imagery which purposefully emphasizes the bond between man and nature. Over the years he has won numerous awards for his work at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, and the Red Earth Festival in Oklahoma City. Manchego continues to work and live on the Santa Ana Pueblo as he has done his whole life, recognized as one of the great masters bridging the gap between the modern art world and the American tribes, and collectors seek out his stunning works in pencil, charcoal, oil, acrylic, pastels, and watercolor.
