Conrad Kiesel was born on November 29th, 1846 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, first as a youth in private lessons and later full-time when he enrolled at sixteen, and in 1885 he moved to Berlin, where he had already participated since 1870 in the exhibitions of the Academy of Fine Arts in the city. He continued his studies at the Berlin Academy, and became one of the most important German exponents of salon painting of his time. He routinely depicted young girls and society ladies, often with instruments and far-off looks in their eyes, and sometimes used the same model over and over for different garments to demonstrate his mastery of painting clothing of any class and culture. Kiesel was also successful internationally, notably in Vienna and London, as well as at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1900 and Rome in 1911. He passed away in 1921 in Berlin, and was a major influence on the pastoral style of portraiture for several decades afterwards.
Commensurate with age.
