Antique Chinese Patinated Bronze Jue Wine Vessel. Antique bronze tripod vessel with carved patterns and ram's head handles. Patinated.
Jue (爵) are ancient Chinese ritual wine vessels used during the Shang (c. 1600–1046 BCE) and Zhou (1046–256 BCE) dynasties, characterized by their distinctive tripod design, elongated spout, and a handle often adorned with taotie motifs. Made primarily of bronze, jue were used for heating and pouring wine during ceremonies, symbolizing power and status among the elite. Their form includes a pair of small posts near the rim, possibly for holding while pouring or suspending a cover. As significant artifacts of early Chinese metallurgy and ritual practice, jue vessels reflect the sophistication of Bronze Age craftsmanship and the spiritual importance of ancestral offerings.
